Pests in New Jersey
Many pests make their homes in New Jersey. While ants, ticks, flies, termites, rodents and snakes are all common here, bees often fill our clients with the most fear. After all, bee stings can be quite uncomfortable and may even cause dangerous allergic reactions. The three most common types of bees in New Jersey include bumble bees, honeybees and carpenter bees. You are probably already familiar with honeybees, a protected species, and with bumble bees, which are their furry counterparts. However, you may not know a lot about carpenter bees.
What Is a Carpenter Bee?
Carpenter bees are a dangerous type of bee because they can bore holes into wood and may make nests in dead trees or your home. While they look quite similar to bumble bees, they do not have any yellow marks on the lower parts of their bodies. You may be able to tell that you have an infestation of carpenter bees if you see round holes in the wood surrounding your house or if you notice bees hovering around the perimeter of your home.
Do Carpenter Bees Sting?
Your first concern when coming face to face with a carpenter bee is whether it is going to sting you. The good news is that you do not have to worry about the male bees as they do not have stingers. However, females do have stingers, but it is nearly impossible to tell males and females apart. Therefore, you should always avoid aggravating them if you come into contact with them and should back away slowly and carefully if you find a carpenter bee nest nearby.
